A 3D printing enthusiast has developed an innovative approach that allows users to trigger 3D prints directly from a virtual reality (VR) environment. This creative method, which involves "throwing" virtual 3D models at a printer, showcases an exciting intersection between VR and 3D printing technology.
The hobbyist, identified as Hank, shared a video demonstrating the process while using a Meta Quest 3 headset in passthrough mode. In the video, he quickly creates a 3D model on a virtual display, grabs it with a virtual hand, and throws the model towards his 3D printer, prompting it to start printing.
Using a Bambu Lab P2S printer, which has received positive reviews, Hank’s prototype makes use of vibe coding to establish a bridge between his PC and the 3D printer. Although the printer doesn’t support direct integration with the Meta Quest 3, Hank creatively employs the headset’s mixed reality space to transmit model files from his computer to the printer.
Hank’s setup includes his PC functioning as a web server, enabling the VR app to communicate model files efficiently. The throwing action is a novel visual interface to make this technical process more intuitive and engaging.
This project has garnered significant interest within communities that merge VR with 3D printing. While Hank’s current implementation is not widely compatible, he plans to share his code once he refines it further, potentially opening up new possibilities for VR users in the 3D printing space.
