Metal DMLS — Direct Metal Laser Sintering
DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) fuses fine metal powder with a high-power laser to build fully dense metal parts — for end-use components, tooling, and demanding mechanical and thermal applications.

How Metal DMLS works
A high-power laser selectively melts and fuses fine metal powder, one thin layer at a time, inside an inert chamber. Each layer is welded to the one below, building a fully dense metal part. Support structures anchor the part and conduct heat away during the build.
After printing, parts are stress-relieved, removed from the build plate, and typically post-machined on critical surfaces to reach tight tolerances. DMLS produces real metal parts with mechanical properties comparable to wrought material, in geometries impossible to machine.
What Metal DMLS is best for
- End-use metal brackets and components
- Conformal-cooling tooling and inserts
- Lightweight lattice and topology-optimized parts
- Aerospace, automotive, and medical parts
- Low-volume metal production
Strengths & trade-offs
Strengths
- Genuine, fully dense metal parts
- Complex geometries and internal channels
- High strength and heat resistance
- Production-grade alloys
Trade-offs
- Highest cost of all processes
- Requires supports and post-machining
- Longer lead times
- As-printed surface is rough
