Fort Bliss Begins Construction of Innovative 3D-Printed Barracks

Fort Bliss has officially broken ground on a project that will see the construction of 10 new 3D-printed training barracks. This initiative is highlighted as the largest robotic construction project undertaken by the Department of War. Military leaders are optimistic that the new barracks will provide higher-quality housing for soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss, while also being constructed more quickly and cost-effectively.

The Army is collaborating with construction company ICON for the project, which promises that the 3D-printed materials will be more resilient against the elements and erosion, outperforming traditional building materials. Jason Ballard, CEO and co-founder of ICON, emphasized how 3D printing could minimize material usage without compromising building standards, stating that it allows for precise material deposition that meets strength and performance requirements without excess.

Jordan Gillis, the assistant secretary of the Army for energy installations and environment, reported that this 3D-printed barracks project is unprecedented, with plans for further expansions at other locations in the pipeline. The goal is for the completed barracks to house up to 560 soldiers by June, significantly enhancing living conditions compared to temporary facilities that have been previously utilized.

Fort Bliss officials assert that the 3D printing method is not only innovative but also a sustainable solution, expected to save the government money while ensuring safe and comfortable living environments for the troops.
