Divergent Technologies is set to begin 3D printing a crucial element of the Tomahawk cruise missile at a new facility located in Long Beach, California. This factory, referred to as “Factory 2,” will span 430,000 square feet and has the capacity to produce over 30,000 missile airframes or 60,000 warhead casings annually, depending on defense requirements.
Divergent’s Chief Executive, Lukas Czinger, announced that the production is scheduled to kick off in the first half of next year. This ramp-up is part of a contract with RTX’s Raytheon, making Divergent a supplementary supplier for the Tomahawk missile’s midbody structure, which is essential as Raytheon seeks to enhance its production capabilities.
Czinger emphasized the critical need for increased production, stating, "We need all hands on deck, we need as many of these as we can possibly get, and Divergent is good complementary supply for Raytheon." The partnership aims to fortify the supply chain ahead of a finalized contract expected after Congress passes the fiscal 2027 budget.
The new production capacity marks a significant increase, allowing Divergent to expand its annual output eightfold for both defense and commercial clients. While the facility is designed to accommodate different manufacturing needs, around 80% of its output is currently dictated by growth in defense contracts.
Divergent’s Factory 2 will utilize their advanced "Monolith One" series of 3D printers, with 64 machines set to double production throughput compared to current models. These printers are noted for their high reliability and cost-efficiency, featuring the highest laser power and the most advanced delivery systems available on the market.
In addition to its work with Raytheon, Divergent also has contracts to produce structures for various defense programs, including the Air Force’s Family of Affordable Mass Missile and the Low Cost Containerized Munitions Program. The company’s strategic pivot towards defense over the last three years has positioned it well for future growth.
