Making a film camera has become accessible to enthusiasts ranging from amateur experimenters to skilled machinists, thanks to advancements in 3D printing technology. Recently, a project by Camera Things showcased an innovative approach to constructing a homemade camera shutter, an area that has historically posed significant challenges for DIY builders.
The unique design features a sliding shutter mechanism that operates with a rubber band, allowing for the adjustment of shutter speed. By partially retracting a blind strip, users can control the width of the light passing over the film, mimicking the effects of varying shutter speeds in conventional cameras. While this mechanism is currently limited to a half-frame shutter due to spatial constraints, the creator plans to explore a more complex design using vertical leaves.
Although the relevant files have not been shared for public use, experienced CAD users may find it feasible to replicate the design. This innovation marks a milestone as not only does it introduce a variable shutter mechanism in a printable format, but it also opens doors for further experimentation in the realm of 3D-printed cameras. For context, this isn’t the first 3D printer shutter we’ve encountered, but it stands out as the first with variable capabilities.
