Oliver Taylor, a 13-year-old from Utah, has taken his summer into his own hands by constructing a 3D-printed beehive in his bedroom, attracting a buzzing community of bees. His innovative design features two hexagonal units connected to his bedroom window through a ventilation tube, reminiscent of a compact air conditioning system. With careful planning, Oliver estimates that his hive now houses around 30,000 to 40,000 bees, which are already producing honey.
Inspired by traditional beekeeping and the high cost of commercial designs, he decided to create his own version after finding one that exceeded $1,000. With support from his family, including his dad’s artistic eye, Oliver utilized his skills with a 3D printer he received at age eight and software called Blender to create a custom hive. He significantly enhanced the design by adding an extra door to prevent bees from escaping whenever a new unit was added—a clever fix inspired by submarine hatches.
Oliver began his beekeeping journey with a starter kit containing a queen bee and 12,000 worker bees. To help them settle in, he designed a feeding system that provided sugar water until they adapted. His careful nurturing has led to a thriving bee community, and he enjoys watching them as they navigate through the hive. Despite some challenges, such as a small hole that created a temporary bee frenzy, he remains passionate and plans to expand his hive further.
Looking ahead, Oliver envisions implementing a honey extraction system and possibly selling the honey produced by his busy bees. His enthusiasm for building and engineering bodes well for future projects, and he’s even considering expanding the hive setup across his bedroom walls. His story has garnered significant attention online, with a recent video about his creation receiving vast engagement on social media platforms.
