Overcoming this, the team developed a hydrophilic silicone formula suitable for layer-by-layer construction.

Another challenge lies in the inherent imperfections of 3D-printed objects, which can result in discomfort or impaired vision. To combat this, the researchers applied a specialized ultra-thin coating that smoothens the lens surfaces without altering their custom shapes.

Testing has shown that these 3D-printed lenses are biocompatible, providing the same optical clarity and mechanical properties as traditional lenses. The next steps for the team include conducting real-world testing and moving forward with the patent process, bringing this innovative technology closer to commercial availability.
