3D printing technology has significantly evolved, especially in the field of contact lenses. Historically, contact lenses were made from glass and proved uncomfortable for all-day wear. Modern lenses, made from soft materials like silicone hydrogel, are more user-friendly but still pose challenges, especially for individuals with irregular corneas. For many, this means compromise between comfort and clarity, often leading to expensive and time-consuming custom fittings.
To address these issues, a team at the University of Waterloo in Canada has been working on a 3D printing solution for personalized contact lenses. This innovative technique allows for the creation of lenses tailored to an individual’s unique cornea shape. The procedure begins with specialized software to create a digital model. Within about 20 minutes, the custom lens is printed, all during a single visit to the eye care provider.
One significant hurdle the researchers faced was finding an appropriate material for the lenses. Silicone is ideal due to its softness, oxygen permeability, and biocompatibility, but it does not naturally lend itself to 3D printing. Overcoming this, the team developed a hydrophilic silicone formula suitable for layer-by-layer construction.
Another challenge lies in the inherent imperfections of 3D-printed objects, which can result in discomfort or impaired vision. To combat this, the researchers applied a specialized ultra-thin coating that smoothens the lens surfaces without altering their custom shapes.
Testing has shown that these 3D-printed lenses are biocompatible, providing the same optical clarity and mechanical properties as traditional lenses. The next steps for the team include conducting real-world testing and moving forward with the patent process, bringing this innovative technology closer to commercial availability.
