When attending IFA 2025 in Berlin, I discovered Elegoo, a company that produces the Centauri Carbon 3D Printer. I had never ventured into 3D printing before, mainly due to its complexity, which includes understanding CAD, filaments, slicing, and calibration. However, Elegoo claims that this printer is designed to be user-friendly and print straight out of the box.
Upon setting up the printer, I appreciated its full auto-calibration feature, eliminating many technical tasks. I was excited to print models, especially a multi-phone holder. Unfortunately, my attempts with self-downloaded files were unsuccessful. A pre-loaded model of the Eiffel Tower worked flawlessly, highlighting that my file format was likely the issue. I learned that .STL files need a slicer program to convert 3D models into a format that printers can understand.
I tried a few different slicers before reaching out for help. Elegoo recommended their own slicer, Elegooslicer, which turned out to be very effective. This app allows users to set up and monitor prints, which provided a much smoother experience. Since I resolved the software hurdle, I’ve been printing various items with ease, including phone props and pen holders.
The Centauri Carbon itself is an enclosed system, which is crucial for home use. It has a sizeable footprint of 16” x 16” x 20” and provides a print area of 256mm on each side. While it only handles one filament color at a time, its design is bundled with convenience.
At a price point of under $400, or sometimes as low as $299 directly from Elegoo, it strikes an accessible balance between affordability and functionality. Although there are cheaper options, the Elegoo 3D printer stands out as a great entry-level solution for beginners. My experience from unboxing to consistent printing in less than a week has been impressive, making me feel accomplished in a technology that once seemed out of my reach.
