Most custom car builds require significant planning, time, and skill. However, the team at the Irish automotive channel Drift Games took on a unique challenge—constructing a fully functional, half-scale Nissan Silvia S13 drift car entirely from 3D-printed parts in just one week.
A Mammoth Undertaking
The foundation of this ambitious project was a "Legend car," a tube-frame race chassis powered by a Yamaha motorcycle engine, ideal for a scaled-down drift setup. To meet their deadline for the Gravity Show, a premier modified car exhibition in the UK, they needed to create the entire body from scratch.
The crew employed a fleet of Bambu Lab 3D printers to produce more than 200 individual panels, all made from approximately $400 worth of filament. The initial printing time was estimated to be around 350 hours, but this number grew to 460 as they faced unexpected challenges.
Race Against Time
With only seven days left until the Gravity Show, the team found themselves racing against the clock. They worked around the clock, assembling the extensive collection of plastic panels, likening the task to piecing together a giant jigsaw puzzle without a picture.
To bond the components, they used melting staples, structural acrylics, and super glue. Given that standard 3D-printed plastic does not hold up well under the stresses of motorsport, they reinforced the shell with sheets of fiberglass and resin to enhance its structural integrity, striving to give it the durability of a traditional fiberglass bumper.
Bringing Their Vision to Life
The final design aimed to pay homage to the legendary Nissan S13, known for its striking aesthetics within the drift community. Despite facing issues like failed overnight prints and a hectic crash structure fabrication, the team triumphantly converted a heap of plastic into a recognizable and functioning drift car.
In their reflection on this mad race to completion, the crew described the experience as "possibly the most outlandish fun build" they had ever undertaken.
