YouTuber Matthew Trahan is pushing the boundaries of 3D printing by attempting to print an entire outfit. Known for a variety of quirky 3D-printed creations, Trahan aims to challenge big fashion brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton by taking production into his own hands. His latest project is a full outfit composed of a shirt, shorts, shoes, socks, a belt, hat, wallet, bag, tie, and glasses.
While the endeavor comes off as light-hearted and comedic, it also uncovers the potential of 3D printing in fashion. Despite some humorous outcomes, such as his impractical technicolor vest and unconventional shorts, some of Trahan’s designs are quite impressive, especially his colorful shoe creations.
The major challenge in this project lies not just in the design but also in the technical aspects of 3D printing clothing. Trahan admits he lacks expertise in making clothing patterns, but the use of certain designs could inspire professional designers. Although shows like Project Runway have explored 3D printing in fashion, advancements in the technology have revolutionized the possibilities since then.
However, 3D printing fashion isn’t without cost. Trahan’s project involved approximately $100 in materials for filament but also required a high-end 3D printer, which can cost nearly $2,000. In addition, he dedicated 33 hours to modeling and 560 hours to printing. While the cost of electricity for the printing is relatively low (around $13.30 for 560 hours based on estimates), the true expense comes from the necessary equipment and the time invested.
For those considering diving into 3D-printed fashion, having access to advanced printers and design skills is essential. If not, conventional means of fashion like shopping at stores remain a more practical choice.
