Walmart has collaborated with 3D construction pioneer Alquist 3D to create an 8,000-square-foot addition to one of its supercenters in Tennessee. This initiative, among the largest of its category, will serve as an online pickup and delivery center for Walmart shoppers. Walmart is so impressed with the results that it has initiated another project with Alquist 3D.

Zachary Mannheimer, the founder and chairman of Alquist 3D, spoke with CNBC’s Squawk Box about their projects and the future of commercial structures using 3D printing technology. While expressing pride in the accomplishment, Mannheimer acknowledged the difficulties associated with constructing on such a scale. He stated, “This was not an easy task. A lot was learned throughout the process, but what we’ve achieved now is a significant commercial structure.”

He mentioned that the Walmart expansion’s impressive 20-foot height was notable along with its considerable square footage, stating, “That hasn’t happened before with something this size. So, we gained a lot of insights from this project and we’re looking forward to the next one.”

Mannheimer recounted the various challenges they encountered while completing the project, mentioning that achieving the ability to “pump the material at the speed and height we needed to really save time and move quickly and managing temperature control” were among the biggest hurdles. He explained that the elevated surface temperatures at the project location necessitated his team to work during the night.

While Mannheimer believes he hasn’t fully navigated the learning curve associated with 3D printing large structures, he noted that at peak efficiency, his team managed to build 325 square feet of structure with just three workers in a few hours. He remarked that 3D printing isn’t “dramatically less expensive” than traditional construction methods, but he sees potential for future advancements.
