Supernova Launches Innovative Unit Dedicated to Advancing 3D Printing in Defense and Space Industries

On August 15, 2024, Supernova, which evolved from BCN3D earlier in February, unveiled a new division specifically aimed at enhancing 3D printing applications within the defense and space industries. Named Supernova Defense & Space, this branch is set to focus on producing energetic materials essential for various applications in its target sectors.

Supernova Defense & Space will address the limitations of conventional manufacturing methods, particularly in creating sophisticated items such as Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs), which require highly viscous materials. The company’s innovative Viscous Lithography Manufacturing (VLM) technology emerges as a revolutionary solution by facilitating the handling and production of materials with viscosities up to 100 times greater than what standard additive manufacturing processes can support.

Using VLM technology enables the incorporation of oligomer chains into material formulations, significantly boosting mechanical properties. This technological advancement positions Supernova to handle military-grade material formulations with solid loads over 80%, surpassing the capabilities of existing 3D printing technologies.

Supernova has showcased the efficiency of its VLM technology by printing materials with over 88% solid loads. This success has led to the creation of a specialized unit focused on producing military-grade energetic substances such as Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellant (APCP) and Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX). These compounds release large amounts of energy quickly and are utilized in propellants and explosives.

The integration of advanced VLM technology with these energetic materials allows Supernova Defense & Space to provide numerous advantages. These benefits include enhanced energy density, improved management of solid loads, stable and uniform properties, and the ability to create intricate designs.
