3D printing has significantly advanced over the last decade. I still remember when my middle school introduced its first 3D printer back in 2013; we were all instructed to handle our creations with great care. The limitations of our equipment meant we could hardly produce anything large or structurally robust, and back then, I didn’t truly grasp the potential of this technology as I do now.

The standout feature of the Ultra is its 3D-printed technology, which plays a crucial role in its functionality. Autonomous crafted a series of helical springs that run beneath the seat, designed to provide the soft, pressure-relieving sensation of foam while maintaining their shape over time. Forget about sinking into a dip.
Autonomous even provided me with a cutout of the chair to examine the intricate network of nodes and support structures. The cutout reveals that there is still some foam on the top of the seat, but the springs play a significant role in the chair’s comfort. A rubber liner is positioned between these layers to evenly distribute your weight across the springs, and everything rests on an air gap that enhances shock absorption.
Until recently, I had been without a chair in my apartment since moving in. Last week, however, an entire shipment of chairs arrived at once. Initially, I felt overwhelmed at the thought of having to assemble each one painstakingly. To my surprise, when I opened the box of the Ergochair Ultra, I found only three pieces to connect.
Assembling this chair didn’t require any tools, which was a relief. The entire process of unpacking it from its oversized box and putting it together took me under five minutes. I was initially annoyed that the box was too large to get through my apartment’s front door, but at least I was able to spend very little time in the mailroom. Once put together, I felt confident that it wouldn’t fall apart.
At first glance, the lumbar support in this chair seems somewhat lacking. However, it’s one of the most robust and well-defined supports I’ve tested in recent times. I didn’t realize its quality during assembly since it’s concealed behind a substantial spine that runs along the backrest, offering remarkable structural strength.
The metal base is another robust element. There was no sign of sagging or dragging as I moved the chair on my carpet. On the downside, the casters feel a bit cheap, being made from plastic, but they’re simple to detach and replace if you decide to upgrade to rollerblade wheels.
In summary, this chair offers a surprisingly well-rounded experience for its moderate price range. While it may not astound me on its own, the impressive technology embedded within it is hard to overlook. I haven’t conducted any long-term evaluations yet, but I’m eager to see how it performs during extensive use.
