From Concept to Creation: Building a Dream DIY Dual-Format Camera in Just Four Days of 3D Printing!

David Hennen, a film photographer and designer, has achieved an impressive feat by creating a DIY dual-format camera that can switch between 645 and 6×9 film sizes using the same roll of 120 film. Inspired by the renowned Hasselblad XPan, which seamlessly transitions between frame sizes, David shared his innovative project on social media.

The project began nearly a year ago, with David posting CAD designs as he worked on modifying a previous 6×9 camera he 3D printed. It took a total of 43 hours to print the camera body. However, after identifying some necessary design improvements, he decided to start over, leading him to reprint the entire body once again.

The final version features an elegant wood veneer finish that adds a premium touch reminiscent of high-end brands like Leica or Hasselblad. It also includes two viewfinders to accommodate its dual-format functionality, with a Komura Super W 47mm f/6.3 lens mounted on it. This lens allows for an equivalent focal length of 21mm in 6×9 mode and 28mm in 645 mode.

David’s determination paid off, as the finished camera not only looks striking but also functions flawlessly. Through embedded Instagram clips, viewers can witness this remarkable DIY creation in action, showcasing the unique charm and craftsmanship of Hennen’s work.
