Bambu Lab has teamed up with seven accessibility organizations to launch a global design challenge aimed at creating assistive devices through 3D printing. This initiative will run from September to December 2026, inviting designers to address everyday challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. The challenge will provide 24 briefs focused on needs identified by participating organizations, facilitating a direct connection between designers and rehabilitation professionals.
The briefs include real-life challenges presented by advocates, like Jessica Cox from Rightfooted Foundation International, who highlighted tasks such as putting on a sock, carrying pet supplies, and securing a bicycle helmet. The Emerging Tech Lab at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center contributed additional briefs, focusing on customized tools that enhance independence for those with disabilities.
Notable project requests include:
- A toothbrush designed for one-handed use by Ayúdame3D.
- A tool to assist with tying hair for individuals with limited hand mobility.
- A one-hand kitchen toolkit proposed by E-Nable France.
- A support device for knitting aimed at stroke survivors by Makers Making Change.
- A game designed for children with cerebral palsy from PrintLab.
Participants will have two months to submit their designs, after which selected models will undergo testing with users identified in the briefs. The final designs will be added to open-source libraries and distributed through networks providing assistive devices in over 70 countries, ensuring broad accessibility.
Each participating organization will play a role in promoting the challenge, conducting evaluations, and distributing the final products. For instance, Ayúdame3D aims to distribute devices in Africa and other regions, while MakeGood will leverage user research for design briefs. The challenge seeks to empower creatives to deliver practical solutions that genuinely enhance daily living for individuals with disabilities.
