Tyler Rockwell, a 12-year-old boy from North Carolina, is beginning his recovery journey after suffering severe burns on 35% of his body due to an accident involving a 3D printer.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred on June 12 while Tyler, who has been using the 3D printer for three years as a hobby, was trying to fuse two pieces of plastic he had printed. He mistakenly took a damp paper towel outside to help with the melting process, which unexpectedly caught fire. In a panic, Tyler dropped the towel, and the wind blew it into a nearby bottle of rubbing alcohol, causing a significant explosion.<\/p>\n
Tyler\u2019s mother, Donavon Rockwell, recalls the terrifying moment when she heard her son screaming and recognized a burning smell before even seeing him. Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported Tyler to UNC’s Burn Center to receive urgent medical care.<\/p>\n
The young boy suffered from second and third degree burns, particularly severe on his right ear and hand. As part of his treatment, Tyler underwent skin grafts, frequent cleanings, and a series of medication regimens to manage his intense pain. Initially, doctors indicated that his hospital stay could extend for weeks, but he has made remarkable strides and was discharged after nearly three weeks.<\/p>\n
Moving forward, Tyler must wear compression sleeves and UV-protective clothing for at least the next year. Additionally, the accident has left him with significant damage to his eyes, leading to worsened eyesight.<\/p>\n
