Today, the field of space freight transport is largely dominated by the American company SpaceX, known for its Dragon capsule. However, a new competitor has emerged from Europe\u2014The Exploration Company, which aims to revolutionize space logistics and provide a viable alternative to SpaceX.<\/p>\n
Founded in July 2021, The Exploration Company has developed the "Nyx" spacecraft designed to enhance Europe\u2019s self-reliance in space exploration. Named after Nyx, the Greek goddess of night and the cosmos, these vehicles reflect Europe’s aspirations in both exploration and technology. The company is planning multiple variants of the Nyx spacecraft for different missions.<\/p>\n
The Nyx Earth capsule is tailored for servicing low-Earth orbit space stations, while the Nyx Gateway and Nyx Moon models are intended for the Gateway lunar station and lunar landings, respectively. The Nyx Earth capsule’s inaugural mission is set for 2028, with the goal of refueling the International Space Station (ISS). Future missions are also anticipated to cater to private space stations.<\/p>\n
Nyx Earth is capable of transporting 4,000 kg of cargo to space and returning 3,000 kg back to Earth, boasting the highest payload return capability of any similar capsule in the world. Although the initial launch is scheduled a few years from now, test flights are already underway. A prototype of Nyx Earth will be launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in mid-June.<\/p>\n
The Exploration Company asserts that using the Nyx vehicle could cut mission costs by 25-50% compared to its main competitors. This fully reusable spacecraft can be refueled in orbit, facilitating extended missions. Moreover, the focus on sustainability is emphasized through the implementation of additive manufacturing technologies.<\/p>\n
Maximilian Strixner, a senior 3D printing engineer with the company, oversees the production of engine components using Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) in their dedicated workshop. The complexity of these parts highlights the precision and capabilities of contemporary 3D printing technology.<\/p>\n
