The focus is on creating durable components that can endure the harsh conditions of marine environments, where corrosion due to saltwater exposure poses significant challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the project is the use of copper-nickel alloys (CuNi) in powder form for 3D printing. These alloys are prized for their excellent anti-corrosive properties. When processed using laser fusion technology, a protective layer is formed, enhancing the longevity of parts in aggressive marine settings. The collaboration has examined two specific compositions: CuNi 10 (10% nickel, 90% copper) and CuNi 30 (30% nickel, 70% copper), each with unique characteristics influencing laser behavior and mechanical strength.<\/p>\n<p>The components are being produced on Renishaw\u2019s advanced RenAM 500Q Flex metal 3D printer, which is optimized for R&amp;D purposes. This innovative machine allows for rapid powder switching and, with the help of the Reduced Build Volume (RBV) accessory, can conduct trials using as little as 0.25 liters of powder. This capability has proved crucial in refining printing parameters while reducing material waste.<\/p>\n<p>One of the primary technical hurdles faced was the processing of copper during 3D printing. Given its reflective properties, copper typically resists laser energy absorption, making fusion difficult. Renishaw\u2019s engineering team meticulously fine-tuned several key parameters\u2014such as laser power, scan speed, and hatch spacing\u2014to achieve consistent powder fusion and yield parts with impressive mechanical integrity. Notably, the CuNi 30 alloy, which contains a higher nickel percentage, demonstrated superior processability compared to CuNi 10.<\/p>\n<p>This partnership highlights the transformative potential of additive manufacturing in producing precise, robust parts while also presenting a strategic advantage for naval forces.
