Located in Arida, Wakayama Prefecture, Hatsushima Station was completed in just under six hours, marking a significant advancement in the construction of public infrastructure.

The new station replaces an aging wooden facility that had served the community since 1948. Although modest in dimensions, standing at 2.6 meters tall and covering 10 square meters, it demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to engineering that addresses the pressing needs for rural infrastructure amidst challenges like labor shortages and rising construction costs.

This pioneering project showcases speed, durability, and resilience against seismic activity—essential attributes for structures in Japan’s earthquake-prone environment. The completed building was manufactured by Serendix, a Japanese company known for its expertise in 3D-printed construction, at its factory in Kumamoto. The components were printed within a week and reinforced with concrete and steel for added strength.

On March 24, 2025, the individual sections were transported to Arida, approximately 804 kilometers away. Construction commenced after the last train departed at 11:57 PM, with workers using a crane to carefully position the pre-printed segments overnight. By the time the sun rose the next morning, the station’s shell was fully assembled, showcasing a drastic reduction in construction time compared to conventional methods, which typically span several months.

The financial implications are equally significant, as the project is reported to have cost about half of what a similar reinforced concrete structure would. The 3D-printed walls feature mortar layered through advanced printing technology, with internal sections filled with concrete for added stability against earthquakes.

While not yet operational, the station’s exterior features designs reflective of the local culture, such as embossed mandarin oranges and scabbardfish, both staples of Arida. JR West is aiming for the station to be open to the public by July 2025, pending installation of essential equipment like ticketing machines.

This initiative responds to broader societal challenges, particularly Japan’s declining population and shrinking labor force. Hatsushima Station currently welcomes around 530 passengers each day, with services running one to three times per hour. The successful execution of this project suggests a potential shift in how rural stations—and perhaps public infrastructure more broadly—could be constructed in the future, minimizing manpower and maximizing efficiency.

The Hatsushima Station project is an extension of Japan’s long tradition of engineering excellence in public infrastructure and reflects its ongoing commitment to innovation, even in smaller communities. JR West has expressed interest in applying this 3D printing technology to future station constructions across the country.

In a remarkable feat of engineering, Japan’s JR West has unveiled the world’s first fully operational train station built using 3D printing technology.
