Stratasys, which has entered into an official partnership with NASCAR, has worked with teams like Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) for over 20 years. The regulations surrounding NASCAR vehicles limit the components teams can modify, making it crucial for them to maximize every minor detail for competitive advantage.<\/p>\n
JGR currently operates five 3D printers for a range of applications, including rapid prototyping, tooling, and manufacturing components critical for the race cars, such as housings, ducts, and brackets. The capability to print parts overnight allows teams to tailor their vehicles for specific tracks, leading to enhanced performance.<\/p>\n
Although motorsport has traditionally featured track-specific components, the speed and agility with which teams can now adapt and create these parts through 3D printing is revolutionary. Teams can produce non-intensive-use parts from polymers like ASA and ABS while utilizing carbon fiber-infused thermoplastics for parts enduring significant forces, like air ducts or aerodynamic louvers. Additionally, certain engine bay parts require high-temperature thermoplastics, like Ultem.<\/p>\n
A unique request from NASCAR highlighted the need for transparent tubing to ensure compliance and transparency regarding team actions. Consequently, JGR utilized a polycarbonate material that is semi-clear to meet this requirement.<\/p>\n
NASCAR is exploring the potential of 3D printing by producing some standardized components itself to maintain level competition and control costs. For instance, the series has manufactured a windshield duct that cannot be produced through traditional injection molding methods, successfully creating around 1,500 of them to date.<\/p>\n
