However, this may soon change with an innovative method that involves &#8220;ironing&#8221; a temperature-sensitive print material after it has been extruded.<\/p>\n<p>When people envision a 3D-printed object, they often imagine something that features a uniform color and texture. These objects are created by layering a single type of molten polymer that solidifies upon cooling.<\/p>\n<p>To produce a single item that showcases various colors or textures in different areas, a multi-nozzle printer is commonly utilized (although <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/3d-printing\/programmable-filament-multi-material-3d-printing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some alternatives<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/3d-printing\/3d-printing-ink-changes-color\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in development<\/a>). During the printing process, the nozzles sequentially lay down different types of polymer to form distinct sections of the object.<\/p>\n<p>One significant drawback of this multi-nozzle approach is that it tends to waste more print material compared to single-nozzle printers since they frequently switch nozzles. Furthermore, the transition between the various polymers within the printed object is often quite abrupt, which may not always be aesthetically pleasing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>One suggested alternative is to use a singular nozzle to apply a unique polymer that changes colors or textures based on the temperature managed by the nozzle. However, the challenge arises as the nozzle requires significant time to heat up or cool down, leading to an impractically slow printing process.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>This is where &#8220;speed-modulated ironing&#8221; offers a solution.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Created by researchers from MIT and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, this technique employs a standard two-nozzle 3D printer combined with a specialized polymer print media containing a heat-sensitive component.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The initial nozzle melts and applies the polymer at a steady temperature, just like traditional methods. Meanwhile, the second nozzle remains inactive and also maintains a constant temperature, but it moves back and forth across the surface of the applied polymer at different speeds. The longer it spends on a particular spot, the more heat that area accumulates, enhancing the response of the heat-sensitive component.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The technology has undergone testing with three distinct types of print media.<\/p>\n<p>One variant included particles that expanded upon heating, enabling the printed polymer to shift between opaque and translucent appearances, as well as altering its texture from rough to smooth. This material found applications in the creation of water bottles featuring opaque designs against a translucent backdrop, as well as bicycle handlebar grips that offered a combination of smooth and rough surfaces in different areas.<\/p>\n<p>The other two media were made from wood and cork fibers, which prompted the polymer to darken as they charred during the heating process.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers have developed computer models that calculate the optimal speed for the second nozzle throughout the printing process to achieve the desired outcomes with each specific print media. They are now exploring the potential of this technology to modify the acoustic and mechanical properties of a single printed object.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>A study focused on the innovative research led by Prof. Stefanie Mueller from MIT and Asst.
