HAZEL PARK \u2014 The Hazel Park District Library is set to host a summer reading program featuring special workshops showcasing the exciting world of 3D printing. The sessions will run from June 16 to August 7, with a dinosaur theme.<\/p>\n

Notably, Lena Vaynberg, a mathematics professor at Lawrence Technological University, and advisor to the university’s 3D Printing Club, is leading the initiative. She has introduced the use of 3D printers in the library, allowing students to create various objects on demand. The popularity of the printers has grown, leading the library to acquire multiple machines.<\/p>\n

Vaynberg shared her experience of working with the library’s teen group. Initially, she’d bring a 3D printer for them to experiment with, and their enthusiasm prompted the library to expand its 3D printing facilities. She emphasized that the printers convert freely available online computer files into solid items by layering plastic filaments.<\/p>\n

Today, thanks to advancements in technology, the high-end printers at the library can produce items much faster and at a low cost of just 50 cents an hour. The printing material used is environmentally friendly polylactic acid (PLA), made from cornstarch, ensuring it\u2019s safe for young users.<\/p>\n

The summer program will feature several activities, including a demonstration on July 7 for elementary-aged students to paint their own 3D-printed dinosaur figures. Workshops for teens and adults will include sessions on creating articulated models for stop-motion animation.<\/p>\n

Vaynberg noted the multidisciplinary nature of the 3D Printing Club at LTU, bringing together students from various fields such as computer engineering, art, architecture, and mechanical engineering. She sees the collaboration as a bridge connecting students and fostering creativity.<\/p>\n

Amy Beem, a librarian at the Hazel Park District Library, affirmed the positive community response to the makerspace, which allows patrons to engage with 3D printing technology. She expressed gratitude towards Vaynberg for her continuous support and dedication to the library\u2019s initiatives.<\/p>\n
