A decade after its establishment, Central Michigan University’s (CMU) pioneering 3D printing lab, initially known as the MakerBot Innovation Center, has undergone significant upgrades and rebranding as the Art and Design 3D Printing Technology Center, or AD3PT Center. This transformation was made possible through funding acquired from the Go Grants initiative.<\/p>\n

The lab\u2019s chairperson, Scott de Brestian, highlighted the need for modernization both in space and technology, noting that advancements in 3D printing since the lab’s inception warranted a refresh. The AD3PT Center now features 15 cutting-edge Bambu Lab X1E 3D printers, which improve upon previous models by offering faster print speeds and enhanced quality. These new printers also provide features for capturing time-lapse footage of the printing process.<\/p>\n

De Brestian emphasized the enhanced capabilities of the new printers for rapid prototyping, remarking on their potential to help students engage with concepts in a tangible way that surpasses traditional screen experiences.<\/p>\n

In addition to the technological improvements, the lab’s pricing structure has been revamped to make 3D printing more accessible to students and staff, thanks to a decrease in the cost of printer filament.<\/p>\n

The AD3PT Center is located in Wightman Hall and is available for use by current students, faculty, and staff. The process for utilizing the facility has been streamlined; clients now need only to submit their design files through an online form to receive estimated printing costs.<\/p>\n

A grand opening ceremony for the AD3PT Center is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Friday, October 17, in Wightman Hall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
