Following its initial venture into the 3D-printed shoe market for the Spring/Summer 2024 lineup, the brand Rains has introduced a new and bold design. In collaboration with Zellerfeld, a pioneering company in 3D shoe printing technology, they have launched an innovative pair of 3D-printed mules.
This latest joint venture between Rains and Zellerfeld has culminated in the development of the Zip Mule, a chunky slip-on that combines eye-catching aesthetics with groundbreaking technology. I attended the unveiling event at the Rains’ Soho location in New York City, where the mules were featured prominently. The design of the mules integrates textured uppers and pronounced, jagged bases, reflecting Rains’ iconic use of statement zippers.
Set to release on August 14, the Rains x Zellerfeld Zip Mule incorporates the sophisticated 3D printing technology that was also featured in their prior collaboration. These mules are crafted on-demand, which ensures they match personal fit preferences. They come in three colors: black, oat, and orange, each designed to cater to various stylistic preferences.
The collaboration between Rains and Zellerfeld initially took shape with the launch of a voluminous sneaker inspired by Rains’ iconic puffer jackets. It was first introduced during the Paris Fashion Week show hosted by Rains and quickly garnered the interest of both sneaker lovers and fashion experts.
Although 3D-printed shoes are not a novelty, they still sit at the forefront of technological advancement in fashion. The process behind these innovative shoes stirs excitement among even the most conventional enthusiasts, as it hints at what the future of footwear might look like. Esteemed labels like Heron Preston, Louis Vuitton, and KidSuper have also entered into partnerships with Zellerfeld to explore the expansive capabilities of 3D-printed footwear.
Zellerfeld has extended its reach beyond mere collaborations; earlier this season, they introduced a program enabling fans to design and order their own custom shoes. This venture not only highlights the personalization aspect but also empowers designers to monetize their unique creations.
Through ground-breaking collaborations and tailored 3D designs, Zellerfeld is spearheading the movement to integrate futuristic footwear solutions into today’s market. With the innovative designs from Rains, the duo continues to emphasize the transformative impact of 3D printing in the shoe industry, proving how creative instincts combined with advanced technology can reshape fashion norms.
As Rains and Zellerfeld continue to explore the possibilities of 3D-printed footwear, one thing is clear: this is just the beginning. The Zip Mule is more than just a shoe; it’s a statement of what the future holds for the industry. With each new collaboration, the boundaries of design and technology are pushed further, making the future of fashion not only exciting but also undeniably tangible.
