Surprising Creations: Ars Staffers’ Favorite Unexpected 3D Prints

Part of the excitement in 3D printing stems from uncovering the vast array of items you can create. Initially, you’re likely to print toys or unique decorations, but soon you’ll realize their potential as problem-solving tools. Once you’ve tackled a few minor challenges with 3D-printed parts, you’ll start hunting for other everyday inconveniences you can remedy, often finding that others in the 3D printing community have already shared solutions.

To illustrate this, several Ars Technica staff members have shared unexpected yet useful prints, ranging from practical household items to fun gifts. Whether you’re contemplating diving into the world of 3D printing or already have a printer, these suggestions may inspire your next project.

Coffee Gear

Creating printed coffee accessories has transformed my routine. I designed two coffee bean dosing cups—one out of matte black PLA with a textured finish and another from ABS, which I smoothed for a sleek appearance. For tamping espresso grounds, I crafted a handle from black ABS, which feels more comfortable than metal and ensures an even tamp.

Organizational Tools

My earliest 3D prints were organizational items. I tackled the mess of USB drives and memory cards with a custom 3D-printed organizer, which holds various types of storage media. A modular glasses holder was also a hit in my home, helping manage multiple pairs of sunglasses efficiently.

Aerogarden Baskets and Mario Mushrooms

With my wife being an avid Aerogarden user, I utilized 3D printing to make numerous baskets for her plants, significantly reducing our need to purchase new ones. Alongside practical items, I printed playful 1-Up mushrooms from Mario, which serve as delightful gifts and fidget items – useful for anyone with kids or a fondness for nostalgia.

Custom Storage Solutions

For my workspace, I designed specific track hangers for my Festool tools. The custom adjustments I made, like embedding bolts for locking mechanisms, keep my tools organized and protected. The Gridfinity modular system further enhances my organization capabilities, allowing me to print bins tailored to my needs.

Gardening Aids

Combining my new hobby of gardening with 3D printing has been rewarding. I printed plant supports to help my vining plants grow upwards, essential for maximizing space in my square-foot garden. Selecting PETG filament for outdoor prints ensures durability against sunlight exposure and adds resilience.

Tool Drawer Organization

Inspired by Gridfinity, I created a 50 mm grid organizer for my tool drawer. Each container is specifically shaped for my tools, making it satisfying to keep my workspace neat.

Everyday Convenience Items

A simple yet satisfying project I embarked upon was a toothpaste squeezer. This small tool simplifies tube usage and can be printed in multiple quantities for family or friends. I also made a remote control stand for easy organization, providing custom fit and aesthetic appeal.

Display Props

In addition to practical prints, I enjoy creating display props. One of my favorites is a helmet from The Mandalorian. This specific project demonstrated that even with a standard printer, you can create impressive display pieces with attention to detail through careful assembly and finishing.

These examples reflect just a portion of what you can achieve with 3D printing. From functional household items to whimsical decorations, the possibilities are endless. If you’re considering getting a 3D printer or looking for new project ideas, these examples showcase the creative potential waiting for you.
