Inside Larry Page’s Bold Vision: How 3D Printing is Shaping the Future of Air Travel

Google cofounder Larry Page has launched a new startup, Dynatomics, which aims to leverage artificial intelligence and 3D printing for aircraft manufacturing. The company, led by Chris Anderson, former CTO of Page’s now-defunct flying car venture, Kittyhawk, seeks to transform the aviation industry by exploring innovative manufacturing techniques.

After Kittyhawk began winding down in late 2022, Anderson and a small team focused on integrating 3D printing into aviation. Page has long believed that additive manufacturing could significantly lower production costs for flying vehicles. Their collaboration now manifests in Dynatomics, which was officially registered in California in June 2023. Although their website provides minimal information, it does hint at ambitious endeavors.

Dynatomics has already partnered with a research group at Estonia’s Tallinn University of Technology, investing 60,000 euros for insights on additively manufactured electrical machines. This collaboration is integral for refining processes that could potentially reduce waste and enhance production efficiency.

Historical ties between Page and Anderson played a crucial role in the formation of Dynatomics. During their time at Kittyhawk, they frequently brainstormed ideas, with Page known for his deep knowledge of aviation and a proclivity for 3D printing. Previously, Page envisioned designing a flying car that could be manufactured for around $50,000, a goal Dynatomics could help achieve.

Anderson emphasizes that transforming aviation is essential to making air travel more accessible and changing the transportation landscape by making it significantly cheaper—comparable to car manufacturing. This secretive project, with its emphasis on blending AI with advanced manufacturing, reflects both men’s commitment to revolutionizing air travel and could signal a notable shift in the industry.
