Revolutionizing Automotive Design: The Aether Concept Car and the Power of 3D Printing

The automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift towards sustainable solutions, and the Aether concept car exemplifies this trend. Developed by students at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the Aether is an innovative electric vehicle aimed at environmentally-conscious Gen Z drivers. The design emphasizes technological advancements and personalized features, showcasing a thoughtful blend of aesthetics and functionality.

Led by designer Rafael Corazza, the project incorporates modular interiors and cutting-edge exterior surfaces, merging ecological considerations with a distinct technological edge. The design process leveraged parametric design techniques and 3D technologies, particularly utilizing HP’s Multi Jet Fusion for creating appeal-worthy and practical components, such as speaker grilles, headrests, and cushions.

The team, coordinated by student Lilian Brown, focused on crafting interior elements that balance ergonomics with visual design. They employed custom latticework along with flexible 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), ensuring durability and comfort in the car’s interior. For the vehicle’s exterior, the students carefully designed digital models using Rhino 8, arriving at the final prototype after numerous iterations—approximately 15 to 20—while also tackling the challenges involved in aligning complex hexagonal elements.

SCAD emphasized the innovative aspects of the Aether, stating that it represents a unique design language catering to the Gen Z demographic while honoring classic automotive designs like the Ferrari 312 F1 and Porsche 917. The vehicle features an open top and incorporates an AI companion capable of curating music based on the driver’s preferences. The use of UV-treated acrylic gel for the 3D printing process was pivotal, marking the Aether as the first car fully constructed with this method—which significantly contributed to its rapid development.

In summary, the Aether concept car redefines automotive design by merging sustainable practices with advanced manufacturing technologies, setting a new benchmark for future electric vehicles.
