Luxury Redefined: Over 900 3D Printed Tiles Transform Dubai Hotel Design

If you are following advancements in additive manufacturing, you may already be familiar with the Dutch architecture firm RAP. For several years, this studio has utilized 3D printing to design intricate structures, often serving as stunning decorative elements. Their latest project, named Blue Voyage, features two significant 3D-printed ceramic walls for the Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab hotel in Dubai, a luxurious establishment fusing wellness with opulence along the oceanfront.

Situated at the lobby of the hotel, these walls greet guests with designs that mimic the fluid motion of sea waves, characterized by flowing lines and curves that react to light, reminiscent of sunlight dancing on water. The aesthetic effect is heightened by a grand chandelier installed above, creating a majestic ambiance.

Each wall measures an impressive 6 meters in height and 9 meters in width, constructed from a total of 900 tiles created in RAP’s Rotterdam workshop. The design of these tiles was parametrically modeled, allowing for adjustments to their shape throughout the production process.

RAP describes Blue Voyage as one of the largest 3D-printed ceramic architectural installations globally. The project exemplifies the studio’s commitment to merging computational design with artisan craftsmanship, employing advanced fabrication methods to create expressive, sturdy, and location-specific elements for contemporary architecture.

The tiles were 3D printed using Kuka robotic arms in the Netherlands, while their firing and glazing were executed by the Dutch pottery company Royal Tichelaar.
