Ultimaker Unveils Secure 3D Printer Line: No Wi-Fi or Cameras, Just Hacker-Proof Design

Ultimaker has unveiled its Secure Line of 3D printers tailored for defense and high-security applications. The models, named S6 Secure and S8 Secure, are designed without Wi-Fi or external cameras, aiming to eliminate potential vulnerabilities and enhance security.

These air-gapped printers operate exclusively through USB workflows and do not depend on cloud services, significantly reducing their exposure to cyberattacks. This launch aligns with increasing concerns regarding security risks associated with connected 3D printing systems. For instance, last year, users of an Anycubic printer received unsolicited notifications warning of critical vulnerabilities.

The Secure Line is specifically engineered for environments where data protection is imperative. Key features include tamper-resistant firmware installed at the factory, encrypted file handling, and sealed hardware components. Ultimaker’s high-flow print cores and Cheetah motion planner promise faster printing speeds and better quality, although independent verification of these claims is still pending.

Ultimate’s Senior Vice President for EMEA, Andy Middleton, highlighted that the Secure Line represents a significant advancement in additive manufacturing, allowing defense organizations to produce vital components securely and reliably.

The printers are targeted at mobile units and bases, enabling on-site 3D printing of replacement parts and tools, which enhances operational efficiency. The production of these printers is limited to qualified defense and aerospace entities, with service plans inclusive for two years. However, specific pricing details remain undisclosed.
